Man charged with assault, smashing items with hammer
A Jim Thorpe man has been charged with assaulting a woman and smashing items in her home with a hammer.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Jonathan Amanto of the Jim Thorpe Police Department in the case against Arnold Goldberg:
At 5:11 p.m. Dec. 10, Amanto was dispatched to a home in the 400 block of North Street for a report of shots fired.
Multiple callers heard gunshots and said there was a man calling for help.
Amanto entered the home with his duty pistol drawn and saw a woman sitting on her living room couch.
She said Goldberg, 75, was in the bedroom to the right of the kitchen.
The woman also said there were no guns involved.
The living room and kitchen were in disarray. A window was smashed in the living room and broken glass was in the kitchen.
Amanto called into the bedroom for Goldberg to come out with his hands raised.
Several police units arrived as Goldberg was detained and police spoke with the woman.
Goldberg told police the woman had attempted to shoot him multiple times and wanted help and demanded that police take him to the hospital.
Police stayed with Goldberg as Amanto went to speak with the woman, who said that Goldberg had been released from prison (Goldberg claimed it was the hospital) on Dec. 8, and came to her home, uninvited, and became enraged.
Goldberg first let the woman’s dog out of the house, and then she said he punched her in the back of the head multiple times with his fists.
She said Goldberg smashed the front living room window with a hammer, and smashed glass objects in the kitchen.
He also banged the hammer on the stove several times, before he left the hammer on the kitchen table and went into the bedroom.
The woman said that she has an active Protection From Abuse against Goldberg and wanted charges pressed for the incident.
Goldberg faces charges of simple assault; harassment; and contempt for violation of order or agreement.
He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000, 10% monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Jan. 6 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
