Eight area players named to PFN Coaches Select All-State teams

The Times News area was well represented on the recently released 2020 Pa. Football News Coaches Select All-State teams.

Northern Lehigh’s Josh Schaffer and Jim Thorpe’s Derek Hunter earned First Team honors in Class 2A and 3A, respectively.

Schaffer was recognized for his play at defensive tackle.

The senior led the Bulldogs with seven sacks, was third on the team with 62 tackles and also caused a fumble.

Hunter was also honored for his performance at defensive tackle.

The senior was second on the team in total tackles (57), solo tackles (43) and tackles for loss (10). He also registered 1.5 sacks, caused two fumbles and recovered one.

Jim Thorpe was first in the area in points allowed (21.7) and third in the area in total yards allowed (291.7) en route to a 6-3 overall record and a berth in the District 11 playoffs.

In addition to Schaffer, Northern Lehigh (5-4) also placed Matt Frame (fullback), JC Hunter (center) and Joe Abidelli (outside linebacker) on the Class 2A second team, capping a year that saw the program reach the District 11 title game before falling to Palisades.

Frame, a junior, led the team in rushing with 987 yards (third in the area) and 14 touchdowns (first) on 123 carries.

Hunter, a senior, helped pave the way for an offense that averaged 356.2 yards per game, second-best in the area.

Abidelli, a senior, led the team in tackles with 86 (9.6 per game) while also registering a sack.

Lehighton had two players selected to the Class 4A Second Team in Zach Hunsicker (wide receiver) and Michael Yeakel (offensive guard).

Hunsicker became the school’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving this past season, finishing his career with 114 catches and 1,732 yards. This past season, the senior caught 49 passes for 765 yards and five touchdowns.

Hunsicker was also recently named to the Pennsylvania Football Writers Class 4A All-State Team.

Yeakel, who is also a senior, was a vital part of leading an offense that averaged 316.4 yards per game, fifth among area teams.

Palmerton senior Owen Buck was named to the Second Team at offensive guard in Class 2A.

Buck helped the Blue Bombers’ offense average 336.6 yards and 28.9 points per game, third-best among area teams.

Defensively, Buck also led the team in total tackles (77) and solo tackles (48) and recorded two sacks. He also had two fumble recoveries, caused two fumbles and blocked a punt.
