Jim Thorpe man starts Cookies for Caregivers Facebook group in Carbon

More now than ever, caregivers are at the forefront of the coronavirus pandemic.

So, what better way to recognize them for their heroic deeds than with flour and sugar?

As odd as that may sound, for front-line heroes in Carbon County, it might be just what the doctor ordered.

At least, that was the thought process of Jim Logue, who recently started up his own Facebook group known as Cookies for Caregivers Carbon County.

Logue, who works in the house maintenance department at Blue Ridge Communications in Lehighton, said he got the idea from a story where he read about men who started the concept in Huntington.

He said one of the men had worked for Juniata College, but got furloughed from his job and wanted to teach himself some new things.

“He wanted to learn how to make chocolate chip cookies, a friend did the same, and they started a contest and got the mayor of their town to judge it,” Logue said. “They gave cookies to caregivers out there.”

Logue said the people seemed to enjoy that they gave the cookies to them, so they started making more and had other people contact them to help them make cookies, package them, and deliver them to people at the forefront, such as hospitals, doctor’s offices, police, firefighters, and it just kind of took off from there.

“I joined their Facebook group. One of the founders messaged me,” he said. “It’s not a formal organization; it’s really just people getting together.”

It was at that point Logue said he decided to start the Facebook group for Carbon County that explains what types of cookies they’re going to make, and deliver them.

“We’re going to make them this weekend,” he said. “We’re going to be delivering to St. Luke’s Lehighton Monday morning; two other people are going to join me.”

Logue said he’d like to see as many people become involved in the Facebook group as possible.

“The more people we can get involved in baking, the better it is,” he said. “It’s not only going to be for Christmas, it’s going to be for all year-round.”

Logue, of Jim Thorpe, explained specifically why he chose to form a Facebook group for Carbon County.

“There are a lot of people who are facing difficult times with working at like hospitals, medical professionals,” he said. “Especially with the virus going rampant; people put their lives on the line working with patients.”

Anyone interested in joining the group can look them up on their Facebook page Cookies for Caregivers Carbon County.

“If people are interested in helping, they can request to join the group,” he said. “We’d like to get more people involved in doing the baking and receiving.”

Above all else, Logue, who also is the organist at SS. Peter & Paul Church in Lehighton, said the group affords people the chance to help others.

“This is a simple way of showing appreciation; everyone likes cookies,” he said. “There’s a lot of people who don’t get recognition, and the best we can do is with flour and sugar.”
