Council approves liquor license transfer for Mallard Markets

Mallard Markets in Lehighton hopes the second time is the charm in its quest to sell alcohol on its premises.

On a 5-0 vote, borough council on Monday approved an intermunicipal transfer of a liquor license and approval of a resolution approving the transfer. Councilmen Joe Flickinger and Darryl Arner were absent.

Mallard owner KP was joined at the hearing by attorney Joe Mashinski.

Mashinski said that while the request had previously been granted on April 1, 2019, the seller allowed the license to lapse, and the transfer was canceled.

At that time, council had previously approved a resolution for the transfer of a liquor license from Shrikbj, Carbon Mini Mart 2, 577 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, to the business at 161 S. Second St. in Lehighton.

Mashinski told council that this would merely be an add-on for the business to be able to compete with bigger stores such as Giant.

“There will be no live entertainment,” Mashinski said. “Just get your groceries and get your takeout beer.”

Mashinski said it will result in a couple extra jobs created, and that the employees would be Responsible Alcohol Management Program certified.

At the April 1, 2019, council meeting, Mashinski had said eight to 10 new jobs would be created, and that the business wanted to offer its patrons takeout 12-packs and six-packs of beer.

Additionally, Mashinski said at that time the business planned to utilize new and improved technology that scans IDs to ensure that customers who purchase the takeouts are at least 21 years old.
