Nesquehoning police warn of phone scam

Nesquehoning police warn residents of a phone scam that has been reported.

Police chief Sean Smith said Monday that his department received a call from a resident who received a call from a man claiming that their grandson had a broken nose and was currently incarcerated.

The man then insisted they wire $5,500 for attorney fees to an Empire Bonding in New York City and gave a phone number of 978-699-7315.

Smith said the resident thankfully didn’t send any money and instead called her grandson, who was at home and safe.

“That’s what they do,” Smith said. “They call and say something is wrong with someone you love and play with your emotions.”

He said that anyone receiving a call like this should not follow through with sending money and should report it to police.

Smith also said that as tax time comes around, another scam claiming to be a call from the IRS will probably begin circulating.

In those calls, the caller threatens legal action and prison if the person doesn’t pay.

“The IRS doesn’t call you,” Smith said.

Scams like these are turned over to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.
