Area drivers in Luzerne crashes

Two area drivers were involved in crashes in Luzerne County recently.

State police at Hazleton said a two-vehicle crash was reported at 7:29 a.m. on Nov. 9 at the intersection of Maplewood Drive and Forest Road in Hazle Township. Troopers said Octavio G. Cayetano, 58, of Tamaqua, was making a left turn in a 2017 Volvo onto Maplewood Drive from Forest Road and was unable to make a safe clearance and struck a 2007 Suzuki operated by Louis A. Dewalt, 26, of Girardville.

Dewalt suffered a minor injury but did not require immediate medical attention. The Suzuki had to be towed.

Dewalt was cited for driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked.

The second crash was reported at 1:29 p.m. on Nov. 14 along Route 940 also in Hazle Township. Troopers said Christian M. Halliday, 21, of Hazleton, was driving a 2013 GMC Sierra westbound while William D. Titus, 82, of Weatherly, was operating a 2013 Ford Edge in front of Halliday. Titus applied his brakes to make a left turn onto Wind Hill Drive when his vehicle was struck in the rear by Halliday’s.

Troopers said a passenger with Titus, who they did not identify, was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton Campus, for a suspected minor injury. No one else was injured. The GMC had to be towed.

Halliday was cited for following too closely.
