Towamensing reports virus case

A Towamensing Elementary student tested positive for COVID-19.

Palmerton Area School District informed families of the positive test on Sunday.

“I am awaiting further direction and instructions from the Pennsylvania Department of Health as they investigate this particular case,” Dr. Jodi Frankelli, Palmerton superintendent said in a letter. “This student’s last day in school was Tuesday,

Nov. 17. Anyone deemed to be in close contact with this student will be notified.”

According to the district website, the student contracted COVID-19 from a family member. It marks the 11th COVID-19 positive test for student or employee since the beginning of the school year.

On Tuesday, Palmerton’s board voted 8-1 to move all students to virtual learning starting Dec. 1 and lasting until Carbon County is in, at worst, the moderate stage of community transition for three out of four weeks, starting with the week ending Jan.7.

Palmerton parents and students protested in the borough park on Saturday, asking the district that any post-Thanksgiving switch to virtual learning should not exceed more than one extra week added to Thanksgiving vacation. They are also asking for winter sports to be allowed to begin no later than Dec 1, even if the district is still in virtual learning.
