West End library launches new project

On Nov. 1, the West End Community Library launched a new community program – Our West End Writing Project.

Patti Weiss, the library’s director, explained the West End area has a large older population and it would be an excellent way to preserve the area’s history while engaging with senior citizens.

Weiss explained the project has six books with six different topics. The topics chosen are diverse and appeal to the youth to adult.

Something for everyone

The book topics include: The Adventures of Princess Pickles, To All the Books I’ve Loved Before: a WPCL Reading Advisory, Recipes and Tips for Cooking, A Book of Self Portraits, Memories of the West End of Monroe County and the last topic, Poetry.

“Just like the library’s regular collection, each book can be checked out for three weeks and you may write, draw, and/or collage your entry,” she said.

There is no timeline for how long the library will promote the program, but Weiss said the books will be available for as long as people still want to write in them.

“Once a book is filled, it will be added to our library collection and will be available for check out,” Weiss said.

The goal is to leave a written legacy and that allows the readers to have a look at life in the West End Community of Monroe County.

“For more information, or to check out a book, please visit the circulation desk. Everyone is welcome to come share their story,” Weiss said.
