November 19, 1974 - The Times News announces the resignation of Joe Czutno as Northwestern head football coach. Czutno, who led the Tigers for seven seasons, cites the school’s accepting membership into the new Centennial League as his reason for relinquishing his post. His letter of resignation states he does not feel the program is ready to play football in a league with bigger schools and that it could be detrimental to the program. Northwestern started the 1974 year with only 17 varsity players.
