Bucks man pleads guilty in fatal Kidder crash
A Bucks County man pleaded guilty in Carbon County court on Monday to homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death of personal injury and three counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, all felonies, charges stemming from a fatal crash that occurred in Kidder Township in 2018.
Ian J. Becker, 31, of Chalfont, and formerly of Bethlehem, entered the pleas before Judge Joseph J. Matika, and is facing a state prison term at the time of sentencing.
Kidder Township police investigated a one-car crash that occurred at 4:22 p.m. Nov. 3, 2018, on South Lakeshore Drive in Lake Harmony.
James Boyle, 24, of Albrightsville, a rear-seat passenger, was killed in the crash.
Police said that Becker, the driver, and the front-seat passenger fled the scene after the crash. They were later located and identified.
The 2017 Nissan Altima was traveling at a high rate of speed when Becker lost control and crashed.
Other passengers in the vehicle were identified as John Healey, 26, of Lake Harmony, who fled the scene with Becker; rear passenger, Cole Rex, 25, of Lehighton, who was taken by ambulance to Geisinger Wyoming Valley; and the victim, Boyle, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charges of involuntary manslaughter and seven summary motor vehicle code violations were dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office.
Present in the courtroom were a group of about 20 family members and friends of Boyle. Most of them wore orange T-shirts with Boyle’s photo in his memory.
Matika told Becker that he faces a mandatory minimum state prison sentence of three years up to a maximum of 10 years.
Sentencing was deferred as Matika ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report. Sentencing was set for Feb. 9, 2021.
