Supporters for Girls on the Run Pocono donated more than 300 pairs of gently used shoes at their drive and drop event this Saturday at their Route 209 Sciota office.
“We are so grateful for the community’s support for Girls on the Run Pocono,” said Alison Fennell, a GOTR Pocono board member.
The shoes are bagged up and sold to Funds2Orgs, a company that pays nonprofit organizations for gently used shoes.
“The pay us 4 cents a pound, and right now we have 100 bags of shoes,” she said, and added the money they raise goes to provide scholarships, purchase materials and train coaches.
The goal of GOTR Pocono is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living through a three-part curriculum taught by certified GOTR coaches.
The girls learn life skills through group processing, running games and workouts, while the girls also learn teamwork and understanding on how they can connect with and shape the world at large.
Also, as part of the curriculum, the girls choose and conduct a community service project.
At each season’s conclusion, the girls complete a 5K running event as a group with other teams.
“This year it will be a little different because of the pandemic,” she said.
In previous years, Fennell said GOTR Pocono 5K would be open to the community, but this year it will be a virtual event for people wanting to run in the race.
“We will also be hosting a virtual silent auction on Nov. 21, the same day as the 5K,” she said.
Girls on the Run Pocono serves Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Lackawanna, Luzerne and Wayne counties.
