Tow truck driver attempted to revive man who had heart attack

A man who suffered a cardiac arrest at a crash scene in Mahoning Township on Saturday has died, according to Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller.

Miller said Chad Obenski, 47, of Slatington, suffered a cardiac incident. A tow-truck driver administered CPR at the scene, but he was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Lehighton Campus.

Several people were injured in the crash which occurred just after noon on Route 443

According to reports on the scene, a driver traveling east on Route 443 lost control.

The vehicle climbed the bank of the southwest corner of the intersection with Penn Street. It continued on, striking several other vehicles before coming to rest facing east in the westbound lane.

Numerous medical units responded to the scene.

Also responding was Dave Charbonnier III, who works for All-Points Towing in Lehighton.

Charbonnier was at the shop around the corner from where the crash occurred working in the yard when he said they heard a loud crash and decided to jump in the truck.

Upon arrival, Charbonnier said the driver was lying on the ground on his back.

“I started doing chest compressions on the gentleman, and continued chest compressions until the ambulance arrived,” Charbonnier said. “They loaded him up on the stretcher, put him in the ambulance, and one paramedic asked me if I could drive the ambulance to the hospital and help them get him out of the ambulance and into the ER and operating room.”

Charbonnier - who has been a volunteer firefighter since he was 16 when he started out in Palmerton and eventually moved to Bowmanstown and was a volunteer with them - said once that was all cleared, he got a ride back to the scene.

“It’s just who I am; it’s just what we do,” he said. “A lot of times we’re (All-Points Towing) the first person on scene with the crashes.”

Charbonnier, who said he is not currently active with any fire departments, noted he is CPR certified.

“There was a younger gentleman who was just about to start CPR on the guy (but), I asked him to step aside and I took over,” he said. “I explained to him not to get discouraged, because at the end of the day, he did step up and tried to help; he was trying to do the right thing.”

Charbonnier, of Bowmanstown, said he was saddened by the loss.

“I did the best that I could,” he said. “My thoughts go out to the family.”

Mahoning Township police are investigating the incident. Route 443 was closed to traffic because of the crash.
