Police look for owner of lost meth

When a Lansford resident found a bag of meth on the street in the borough, police decided to take an unorthodox approach to finding its owner.

They posted on Facebook inviting the owner to pick it up from them.

“Please provide the in bag weight of the methamphetamine to properly ID your product,” the post read.

“After identifying this can then be picked up in person at the LPD station.”

Since the post went up last week, it’s been shared more than 300 times, with more than 400 reactions and 100 comments.

No one has come forward to claim the drugs yet. Soberick said it wouldn’t be unheard of. Lansford has had at least one case where a person voluntarily brought drugs to the station.

But the real purpose of the post was making residents aware that people are using methamphetamine, and occasionally carelessly dropping it. He said the bags were found near a school bus stop.

“My whole intent was public awareness of the danger. People are dropping it in the street. And it was tongue in cheek because it sometimes gets overwhelming for us as well,” he said.

Lansford Police now conduct more arrests for meth than heroin.

And arrests for high-quality meth, which Soberick said is trafficked, now exceed homemade meth. One explanation may be that the over-the-counter medications used to make homemade meth are now more tightly controlled.

“It was to let people know this is in our area, this is out there,” Soberick said.
