Blue Mountain Resort employees to be awarded for lifesaving actions

Seven Blue Mountain Resort employees will be presented a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for their lifesaving efforts involving a mountain bike guest.

At around 4 p.m. July 12, a 52-year-old male guest, Alex, who was mountain biking at Blue Mountain Resort, went into cardiac arrest just outside Slopeside Pub & Grill.

Moments after his friends requested first aid, Alex stopped breathing, became unresponsive and his heart stopped. The quick actions of nearby employees restarted Alex’s heart and ultimately saved his life.

Sharon Drummond, who was managing the nearby Summit Adventure Park responded to the initial call for first aid. Simultaneously two Slopeside employees, Sara Seidel and Conor Frey, responded to Alex as well. These three employees administered CPR to Alex.

Michelle Westerman, Slopeside’s restaurant manager, and Dan Haddon, Slopeside’s head chef, quickly responded with an AED and additional first aid equipment. After applying a shock that was advised by the AED, Alex’s heartbeat and breathing resumed.

On duty ski patrollers Jim Feeney and Susie Molnar arrived to help further stabilize Alex with an airway, oxygen and backboard. Alex was urgently loaded and transported to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest and was taken to the cardiac catheterization lab to treat a blockage. Alex was cleared for release from the hospital eight days after the incident. The next day, he called and spoke with a few employees at Slopeside Pub & Grill to thank them for saving his life.

The recognition of these employees will take place from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Summit Lodge Courtyard outside of Slopeside Pub & Grill.
