Tire recycling plant on its way to Bowmanstown

A tire recycling facility can set up shop at the former Prince Manufacturing facility in Bowmanstown.

After a one-hour, 20-minute recess, the borough’s zoning hearing board on Wednesday granted Aleph Industries Inc. a special exception.

Aleph Industries Inc. is a licensed and bonded freight shipping and trucking company running freight hauling business from Irvington, New Jersey.

However, as part of its approval, the zoning board attached various conditions the company must adhere to for the property at 700 Lehigh St.:

• Only the business proposed shall operate on the subject property.

• The business may only have off-street parking.

• All storage of tires, waste, equipment, supplies, and refuse must be contained in a building structure or tractor trailer.

• All tractor-trailers must travel only on state roads.

• Hours of operation are to be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

• The noise level cannot exceed the current level set forth in the current noise ordinance.

• All operations must be maintained within the existing building.

• The applicants must develop an appropriate fire suppression plan in collaboration with and approved by the local fire chief.

• The applicants shall install an appropriate ventilation system to prevent excessive dust from being released into the environment.

However, the board denied both the company’s challenge to the validity of the zoning ordinance, as well as the issuance of a variance.

The hearing on the proposal was continued from Sept. 16.

There are currently several businesses located within the property, among them plastic recycling.
