A Nazareth man pleaded guilty in Carbon County court on Monday to two counts of recklessly endangering another person, involving two young children.
Zachary James Rumley, 26, entered the pleas before Judge Joseph J. Matika. In exchange for the pleas, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child were dropped in a plea deal with the district attorney’s office.
Rumley was arrested on May 4 when Franklin Township police responded to a residence along Willow Street. A neighbor called police after two young children, ages 2 and 3, came to her door and said “the man” in the house was sick, meaning a residence nearby.
Police arrived and entered the home on Willow Street and found it in disarray with items thrown about. The officers then found Rumley in a bedroom in the home semiconscious, covered in vomit. Police administered naloxone to him and he regained full consciousness. He then became combative with EMS personnel who responded and also resisted police officers.
Rumley has been in the county prison since his arrest.
Rumley admitted to a having mental health issues. The children were reported under his care as he was living with their mother at the time.
Rumley said he met the girl on the internet and moved to Pennsylvania from Minnesota. He said after his release from prison he was moving back to Minnesota where his family resides.
Matika sentenced him on both counts to serve 70 to 147 days and gave him credit for 147 days already served and paroled him. He also must pay court costs of about $1,000.
