Local roundup: Results from Sept. 29

The Northwestern boys and girls cross country teams earned a sweep in Colonial League action on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Lehighton earned victories in field hockey and volleyball action.

Bangor-Pen Argyl-Wilson at Northwestern

Northwestern ran away with a sweep in a six-team Colonial League meet on its own course.

The Tigers finished 5-0 in both the boys and girls meet, while the Palmerton boys went 3-2 and the girls finished 2-3.

Northern Lehigh was 0-5 in the boys meet, and 0-4 on the girls side.

Sam Bower, Matt Santana and Cole Chukoskie swept the top three spots in the boys meet for the Tigers, while the Bombers’ Owen Hibell followed with a fourth-place finish. Jared Thomason placed sixth for the Bulldogs.

Palmerton’s Natalie Mosier won the girls meet. The Tigers’ Angelina Klein pushed Mosier to the finish and placed second, while the Bulldogs’ Emma Smith took 16th.

FIELD HOCKEY

Palmerton-Lehighton

Alicia Shaffer scored the go-ahead goal to push Lehighton to a 2-1 non-league victory over Palmerton.

Shaffer started the scoring with a first-quarter goal, before adding the eventual game-winner with 5:54 left in the game. Maddie Becksted and Adriana Hinkle were credited with assists.

Ana Recker posted the Bombers’ lone goal in the first quarter, while Celeste Hoffman recorded the assist.

Indians’ keeper Shelby Heater finished with 14 saves, while Bombers’ keeper Emily Bollinger ended up with seven.

BOYS SOCCER

Weatherly-Lourdes

Weatherly edged Lourdes Regional for a 2-1 Schuylkill League win.

The Wreckers’ Tyler Veasie scored the game’s first goal, while Antonio Colecio added what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Zachary Bresnak recorded an assist.

Frankie Willis finished with eight saves for Weatherly, while his counterpart, Nick de Manincor, grabbed 16 saves.

Salisbury-Northern Lehigh

Salisbury defeated Northern Lehigh for a 3-1 Colonial League victory.

Nick Amaro, Drew Hines and Avare Firngraves recorded the goals for the Falcons.

Josh Sollars scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal off an assist from Grant Olewine. Logan Dyer posted 10 saves in the loss.

Notre Dame GP-Palmerton

Notre Dame Green Pond rolled to a 9-1 Colonial League win over Palmerton.

GIRLS SOCCER

Northern Lehigh-Salisbury

Double overtime wasn’t enough as Northern Lehigh and Salisbury ended in a 2-2 Colonial League tie.

Jayden Fischer and Kaylee Wilk posted the Bulldogs’ goals, while Emily Hunsicker and Shaina Mazzocca both recorded assists.

Bulldogs’ keeper Erica Detweiler grabbed 13 saves.

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

A hat trick from Ava Goodman helped Pottsville gain a 6-1 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

The winners also received a pair of goals from Lexy Maccarone.

Lydia Wallace tallied the only goal for the Olympians, who are now 3-4 in the league.

VOLLEYBALL

Halifax-Marian

Marian knocked off Halifax for a 25-7, 25-10, 25-10 win.

Ashlyn Klitsch led the Fillies’ with 20 assists, while Alivia Karchner chipped in with seven kills, four aces and four digs.

Becca Dzuranin (five kills) and Tat Zeleniak (eight digs) also contributed in the victory.

Lehighton-N. Schuylkill

Lehighton finished strong to secure a 25-13, 20-25, 25-12, 25-23 Schuylkill League win over North Schuylkill.

Maddy Sofranko led the Indians’ attack with 26 assists, five digs and five aces, while Megan Aaron contributed 13 kills and four digs.

Alexis Soloman chipped in with 11 blocks and four kills.

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Southern Lehigh came away with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-9 Colonial League win over Northwestern.

Brianna West led the Spartans with 13 digs, nine kills, one ace and one assist, while Brooke Adams chipped in with 25 assists, two kills and one dig.

Brynn Buschta paced the Tigers with nine digs and five kills, while Ella Carson added 11 digs. Jenna Breininger and Alia Reimert had two kills apiece.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Pine Grove swept Tamaqua in Schuylkill League action, 25-2, 25-11, 25-2.

Megan Wolfe paced the Cardinals with 13 kills.

Williams Valley-Weatherly

Weatherly dropped a 25-16, 25-15, 25-7 Schuylkill League decision to Williams Valley.
