Lehighton pool staff saved summer of 2020

While many establishments remained closed or with limited patrons due to COVID-19 restrictions, thankfully the Borough of Lehighton voted to open their community pool, Baer Memorial Swimming Pool, for their residents in Carbon County, which consisted of five surrounding towns and villages.

Tom Evans, the manager, his staff and lifeguards have kept the pool operating since June 13, and it was no easy task having to turn away folks that did not live in the county. There were rules that needed to be followed for the safety of everyone. Temperatures were taken and sterilization and thorough cleanings were done on a daily basis. Masks were worn in the restrooms and concession stands. They were very attentive and made sure everyone was cared for and felt safe. They were essential in the operation of the pool.

While the crowds they normally drew in every year were not seen, the service to their residents remained top notch. Mr. Evans, who has been running things at the pool for many years, made it his mission and goal to get through the season into Labor Day without any casualties due to the virus. He never wavered or missed a beat. He wholeheartedly cared not only for his residents but his staff as well.

I’m not sure another person would have or could have done what he did while always greeting everyone with a smile. I’ve worked with many individuals over the years, and you’d be hard-pressed to find such caring management and attentive staff. They made you feel like family. In these unprecedented and uncertain times, it was reassuring to have this outlet available to us where we could enjoy the summer days and make memories with our families and friends in a safe environment, all thanks to Mr. Evans and his staff. They definitely went above and beyond the call of duty while putting themselves at risk. I, for one, will be forever grateful to them and the borough for taking a chance under so many uncertainties.

They literally saved the summer of 2020 for a lot of us folks!
