Carbon veterans announcements

The Carbon County Veterans Affairs director, Christine LeClair, has announced the following initiatives through her office.

• The Veterans Affairs office is a collection point for interment (casket) flags, which are used to replace the weather-worn flags used in the Avenue of Flags presentation at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

If you wish to donate a casket flag, please drop it off at the Veterans Affairs office, located in the Carbon County Administration Building in Jim Thorpe.

• Volunteers are needed to help other veterans. The office occasionally receives calls from veterans who need their prescriptions picked up after a hospital stay or who cannot get out of their house temporarily to pick up a small grocery order or Senior Boxes from the food pantry.

LeClair is seeking individuals who would be willing to assist these veterans on an as-needed basis. Interested parties may call or email LeClair at 570-325-3986 or CLeClair@carboncounty.net.

• Carbon County offers Veterans Treatment Court, whose mission is to identify and provide specific interventions for veterans involved in the Carbon County criminal justice system.

The Veterans Affairs office is seeking veteran mentors to assist the court participants on their journey. Applications are available online or can be mailed/emailed to interested parties. Contact LeClair’s office to learn more.

• Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is asking for input in a recent PA Telehealth Community Survey of 2020. To complete the survey, visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/PACommSurof2020. The survey link may also be found on the Veterans Affairs page of the Carbon County website under PA Programs.

• Please take some time to check out the Veterans Affairs page on the Carbon County website for updated information on county, state and federal benefits, as well as volunteer opportunities and upcoming events.
