Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 12

Jim Thorpe gained wins in four sports over the weekend.

The Olympians earned victories in both boys and girls soccer, volleyball and tennis.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Sch. Haven

Jack Morris had two goals and an assist to help Jim Thorpe roll to a 4-0 victory over Schuylkill Haven.

Chris Condly added a goal and an assist for the Olympians, who led 3-0 after the first half.

The winners also received a goal on penalty kick by Andrea Mazella, and an assist from Jonah Coit.

Thorpe keeper Jacob Geiser made nine saves to earn the shutout win.

Minersville-Tamaqua

Ian Davis and Tyler Steigerwalt both registered two goals and had an assist to propel Tamaqua to a 6-1 victory over Minersville.

Davis broke a 1-1 tie in the first half, and the Blue Raiders posted four unanswered goal in the second to cruise to the win.

Mike Shlanta contributed a goal and an assist to the Tamaqua cause, while Zachery Campomizzi also tallied. The winners received assists from Luke Verta and Tim Fritzinger.

Jon Ulicny, the Raiders’ keeper, made five saves.

Tamaqua also won the JV match, 6-2.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

Pine Grove’s Hannevig scored a hat trick to lead the Cardinals to a 6-0 Schuylkill League Division 1 win over Lehighton.

Boyer, Williams and Karenda also tallied for Pine Grove, who posted two goals in the first half and four more in the second.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Nicole Carroll’s goal in the second overtime helped Jim Thorpe rally for a 3-2 Schuylkill League Division 1 victory over Tamaqua in both team’s season opener.

The Olympians trailed 2-0 before Kennedy Rider tallied with 15:28 left in the second half. Lydia Wallace, who would assist Carroll’s game-winner, knotted the score moments later.

Sophia Boyle (on a penalty kick) and Lexi Thomas registered goals for the Blue Raiders.

Jim Thorpe held an 18-6 advantage in shots.

VOLLEYBALL

Northwestern-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe opened its season in convincing fashion, earning a 25-9, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Northwestern.

Autumn Snyder and Krsiten Pompa each had five kills for the Olympians, while Brandy Montemuro and Alexandra Ramey both added four.

Montemuro also contributed 11 assists, with Andi Hoherchak finishing with 10 assists and eight aces.

Abigail McGinley registered 27 digs and four aces.

Shenandoah Vy.-Tamaqua

Shenandoah Valley downed Tamaqua in three sets, defeating the Blue Raiders 25-17, 25-17, 25-13.

GIRLS TENNIS

Notre Dame (ES)-

Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe rolled to a 5-0 victory over Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg, winning every match in straight sets.

Christy McLean only dropped one game in her win at No. 1 singles. The Olympians (4-1) also received singles wins from Gabby Nunez and Trista Gehris.

Tamaqua-Hazleton

Hazleton won all five matches in straight sets to gain a 5-0 victory over Tamaqua.

The Cougars received singles wins from Alyssa Mazurek, Maddie Terraccino and Sydney Shoemaker.

FALL BASEBALL

Franklin Twp.-Emmaus

The Franklin Township Mud Dawgs improved to 3-1 in the Parkland Youth Fall Baseball League with a 6-4 victory over Emmaus.

The winners scored five runs in the second inning with Talin Fairchild, Patrick Devitt and Zach Schrantz all delivering run-scoring singles.

Carter Bellis pitched three innings and struck out four for FT, while Jayse Lawrence tossed the final two frames and also fanned four.
