Carbon man sent to state prison after pleading to felony counts

A Carbon County man entered guilty pleas in the county court on Tuesday to two felony counts and was immediately sentenced to a state prison term.

Timothy John Jones, 30, of White Haven, pleaded to one count each of receiving stolen property, a felony 2, and theft, a felony 3, before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

In the first case he admitted to stealing a skid loader from a site in East Side Borough on April 15, 2019. The theft occurred on April 12, 2019, in which he was originally charged with felony 1, burglary, which was dropped in a plea deal with the district attorney’s office.

The skid loader was recovered but had damages done to it.

Jones told the court he had been battling a heroin addiction problem. He termed the problem “serious” and is seeking help. He said he committed the crimes to get money to pay for his drug habit.

He was recently sentenced in Luzerne and Monroe counties on criminal counts to serve three to six years in a state correctional institution and was made eligible for the state’s drug treatment program in the prison.

Matika sentenced him to serve 18 to 36 months in a state prison on the receiving charge and 12 to 36 months on the theft count, with the terms running concurrent to each other and concurrent to the Luzerne and Monroe sentences.

He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, when paroled, render 100 hours of community service, make restitution in the theft case of $21,000. Restitution in the receiving case will be determined, and pay court costs of about $1,000. He was given credit for 90 days already served on the charges.
