A look back: Sept. 10, 1998

Residents of the Kittatinny section of East Penn Township addressed the Carbon County Commissioners on Wednesday, asking for two access roads in their village in the event of disasters.

The commissioners announced construction of a new route on the former Conrail right of way along the Lehigh River, which the residents said they are appreciative of, but the visitors insisted they be allowed to continue using the Kittatinny bridge on South Kittatinny Road, which state officials have deemed unsafe.

Sara Breinig, speaking on behalf of other residents, said they fear an accident on the new route will inadvertently trap them on the wrong side of the bridge.
