Pleasant Valley caps cyber academy at 800

Dr. Lee Lesisko, superintendent of Pleasant Valley School District, told parents Friday afternoon that the school’s cyber academy has been capped at 800 and anyone who applied after Aug. 27 won’t get in.

At last week’s school board meeting, Lesisko said 1,200 had applied as of that date.

“Unfortunately, our program has limitations on the number of students we can actually serve. We presently have enough materials for only about 800 students who are now receiving bundles (books, technology),” he wrote to parents.

“This is an unfortunate, but necessary action; we have simply been overwhelmed. Please know that we are in the process of contacting by phone those families we cannot serve,” Lesisko said.

He invited families to join the hybrid school plan, which began Monday.

Lesisko said during the first week in school there have been instances where COVID-19 symptoms were displayed.

“We have reacted quickly and consistently to less than 10 different situations, districtwide, in which a student exhibited some type of COVID symptoms. In each case the school nurse was involved, the student evaluated, isolation placement done when necessary and parents contacted. When a student was actually sent home, the clear understanding was that the condition be closely monitored, contact with a physician be made, a test administered if deemed necessary, and a return-to-school document secured by a medical professional prior to the child coming back.”

The affected rooms were sanitized.

Students who want to enroll in the hybrid program are asked to contact their school to set a schedule.

“I apologize for the inconvenience, but there was no way the cyber academy situation could have been anticipated,” Lesisko said.
