Henry Vanderah and his adult daughter, Elisa, did not have to get out of their truck Sunday morning to select their groceries.

They simply parked in one of the designated ShopRite from Home parking spots, called to let store staff know they arrived, waited a few minutes and then began to load their truck bed.

“It’s convenient and easy. All thumbs-up,” said Henry Vanderah.

They have been shopping here at least twice a month for several years.

Kinsley’s ShopRite in Brodheadsville opened its new expanded store area Aug. 17.

“We average 100 online orders for pickup a day. It was overtaking its former location inside the store,” said Bob Hunt, merchandising manager.

When Radio Shack moved out in May and relocated to the shopping plaza across from Pleasant Valley High School, ShopRite acquired the space to remodel and use as its ShopRite from Home pickup area. ShopRite owns the whole building and rents space to other businesses.

“It was a much-needed expansion. We are known as the world’s largest ShopRite and we got even bigger,” said Hunt, who has worked at the Brodheadsville store for eight years and for the ShopRite company a total of 48 years.

ShopRite hired Lynmar Builders to renovate the space.

“They came in, designed a plan and said they would be done in a month and a half,” said Melinda Collister, ShopRite from Home manager for the past 18 months. She has worked at this store for 12 years.

Just as promised, they completed the expansion in six weeks.

This addition project was small-scale compared to when the company constructed the store several years ago.

“Lynmar Builders was approached to build the brand-new Kinsley’s Brodheadsville in Gilbert, PA. We were up to the challenge, and the result was a modern, fresh and clutter-free grocery store for the local community,” states www.lynmarbuilders.com. “The store offers everything you need under one roof in wide, easy-to-navigate aisles with fresh branding and a modern grocery store design.”

In the center of the large room sit various pallets, where red baskets with patrons’ nonperishable orders are placed until they arrive. Upon arrival, the staff retrieve the frozen and refrigerated items and put them with the rest of the order on a steel cart to push outside.

“There is now a walk-in freezer and refrigerator, a large doorway in the back that connects to the inside of the main store, and automatic doors at the main entrance. We had it painted traditional ShopRite colors, which are red and yellow,” Hunt said.

Along the walls are pallets of popular items - bottled water, drinks, paper towels and toilet paper - that can quickly be added to an order without running inside the main store.

“This expansion is great. We ran out of room in the other area. We now have more room to work efficiently,” Collister said.

ShopRite from Home has 33 designated employees. They shop for the clients, fill the cart and organize the order to take outside to the client. If a requested item is not available, they can put a substitute item in its place.

“There is a $4.99 ShopRite from Home fee, but there are weekly promotions to alleviate the cost,” Hunt said.

Patrons select a designated time slot to pick up their groceries. They can start their order up to a week ahead of time and tweak it as needed. There is an eight-hour lead time for orders.

“We have expanded the number of slots for each day,” Hunt said.

Pickup hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Online orders can be shipped to a patron’s home using a subcontractor company, he said.

“I like the ShopRite from Home aspect, but I prefer the previous location at the other end of the store,” said James Willoughby. “If I have to pick up a prescription, I still have to go to that part of the store. They don’t include it with my groceries.”

Hunt agreed that there may be positive and negative aspects of this expansion and relocation of the pickup area.

“Overall, it is great to shop from home. On average, I spend $300 here for my wife and I. We are very happy with the store,” Willoughby said.
