Carbon man who seriously injured couple while DUI is sent to state prison

A Carbon County man who seriously injured a couple on a motorcycle while he was driving under the influence was sentenced on Friday to a state prison term. He also faces a big restitution bill.

John Henry Boyd, 57, of Jim Thorpe was sentenced to serve a total of 24 to 72 months in a state correctional institution by Judge Joseph J. Matika on charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, a felony 2, DUI and simple assault.

Boyd was charged by state police at Lehighton following a crash on April 7, 2019, along Interchange Road at Rock Road in Franklin Township. Troopers said Boyd’s vehicle struck a motorcycle, causing serious injuries to the driver and passenger.

Boyd submitted to a test with the result being 0.14 BAC.

He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, pay a fine of $500, license suspended for a year and have no contact with the victims.

He was also ordered to make restitution of $120,766.91 to the driver and $436,920.84 to the passenger. The amounts are the total of medical bills for treatment the couple received for their injuries. He must also pay court costs of about $1,000.
