Traditions are important

Traditions new and old and why they matter. Traditions large and small help us keep our balance. They draw us together as families, as communities and as Americans, especially during this pandemic.

Traditions lost. When I was a kid, it was customary to lightly spank children on their birthday, one swat for each year and one to grow on. Sharing a large midday meal on Sunday with family members. Sitting on the front porch listening to grandpa tell tales of the past.

New traditions. Movie night at home with a big bowl of popcorn, Black Friday shopping and football have allowed Americans to establish new traditions. Tailgate parties find fan bringing their grills and beverages to the parking lots of stadiums hours before the game begins. Super Bowl Sunday brings together millions across the country.

Old traditions. Thanksgiving Day with turkey and dressing, Memorial Day with backyard barbecues and the Fourth of July with grilled burgers and fireworks.

Balance. Traditions large and small help us keep our balance. They draw us together as families, as communities and as Americans. Traditions are the glue holding our families and culture together. They bond us to the past, provide pleasure in the present and acts as a ballast as we sail into the future.
