Carbon issues guidance on COVID-19 grant funds

Carbon County is fine-tuning its guidance when it comes to how much an applicant can receive from the COVID-19 Relief Block Grant, as well as how applicants will be prioritized.

On Thursday, Commissioner Chris Lukasevich announced that final guidance the county gave the committees who are assessing the applications will include a cap of $100,000 on any grant for the applicants.

Some applicants have put in for hundreds of thousands of dollars through the block grant, which has approximately $5.79 million from the state to be disbursed.

Lukasevich also noted that 90 of the applicants already received other funding from grants as a result of the pandemic and added that priority will be given to applicants who have not yet received any form of funding.

The county received 221 applications for the COVID-19 Relief Block Grant totaling approximately $13.6 million in requests, not including placeholders, but after the first vetting, Lukasevich said the justifiable viable requests is about 2/3 less at $5.7 million.

In addition, 22 applicants were deemed ineligible or have withdrawn their applications.

There are also five placeholders in the applications, three for the entities - Carbon Chamber, Carbon County Community Foundation and the Council of Governments - who are assisting the county in the process; as well as two placeholders for county-related COVID-related items.

The committees now have until Aug. 31 to complete the reviews of the remaining applications. They will then make their recommendations to the commissioners for a final review and awarding of grants.
