Recycling to cease in West Penn by next year

West Penn Township’s recycling program will cease to exist in 2021.

Board of supervisors Chairman Tony Prudenti cited liability issues as the primary reason why the township decided to discontinue its recycling program located behind the township police station.

“We’re just trying to give our residents a heads-up what’s going on,” Prudenti said. “We have a couple people who are doing recycling in the township and called the township building to give names and numbers to people that are doing that.”

Prudenti said earlier this month that it had come to the township’s attention that not only residents in the township were using the program, as people from other areas were using it as well.

The township’s recycling lease was signed in 2012, according to township officials.

Contacted Tuesday morning, Joe Scribbick, Schuylkill County Solid Waste & Recycling Coordinator, confirmed that the township agreed to terminate its lease agreement with the county.

However, Scribbick said the county will continue its recycling program in 2021.
