Parryville hiring youths to help fix borough roads

Parryville residents complained to the borough this week about the condition of the roads.

Council met at the Parryville Fire Company to allow room for social distancing.

Parryville resident Robert Miller raised safety concerns about the swale located on Lower Main Road, asking, “When are they gonna finish Lower Main Road? There’s a big hole there all the way down. Somebody will get caught in there and then there’ll be a lawsuit.”

Part-time borough laborer Doug Hawk responded, saying, “We’re hoping by the end of September. Everything’s pushed behind because COVID-19 stopped us from working. I lost all my employees because they get paid more not to work than they do to come here and work part time.”

He said the borough hired four people and is getting caught up on road project, clearing brush and weed whacking. South Fireline Road and North Fireline Road are getting tarred and chipped here probably by the end of August.

“Over the last two weeks we got a lot done. We’re all part-time, it is what it is. We’re not a full-time crew on standby working seven days a week,” Hawk said.

The potholes are fixed on Lower Main Road but the swale will take time.

“In the moment it’s not happening,” he said.

Council is also looking toward applying for grants to further aid in the amount of road construction.

With the borough approving a motion to hire summer help from local youth for $8 per hour, they hope to finish all major road work projects by the end of September.

In addition to cleaning up Parryville roads, residents are encouraged to keep their properties clean and remain mindful of neighboring properties as well.

Violators will receive citations for any major offenses deemed necessary by the borough zoning officer.
