CCTI adopts its reopening plan for the fall

With its eye on an early September start, the Carbon Career and Technical Institute Joint Operating Committee adopted a reopening plan for fall semester on Wednesday.

The plan, unanimously passed by committee members, includes a blended reopening, where students are placed into two groups. They attend class on different days, and the school will not meet on Fridays.

The new policies were presented by David Reinbold, administrative director for CCTI.

“Our goal is, after tonight, to communicate everything as much as we can, make sure everybody understands what the school year’s going to look like, how it’s going to start,” Reinbold said.

“We want everybody, obviously, to be ready for Sept. 8.”

When in-person, students spend all day in their technical courses, while academic ones are delivered virtually. Academic teachers will be in the building, so students can go to them for tutoring help.

This year, some students will be allowed to drive themselves to CCTI, as part of an effort to reduce bus crowding. (Reinbold said available permits have been claimed.) Parental transportation is also encouraged.

Staff and students will be required to complete a symptom self-check at home before coming to class. The school will also set up isolation rooms in the event that someone does present symptoms while on campus.

Lunches will be eaten in classrooms, and food sharing will be prohibited.

Mask wearing guidelines will follow Gov. Tom Wolf’s universal face coverings order, meaning they will be required. But students won’t be allowed to display messages or slogans on them.

The school has acquired 160 more Chromebooks to limit device sharing between students, through those who own laptops are encouraged to bring them.

Visitors, for the most part, will not be granted entrance in the building. And to keep outsider attendance down, the joint operating committee will be moving its future meetings online.

The next one is scheduled for Aug. 20.
