Palmerton woman receives infantry award

Margaret K. Duell of Palmerton has been recognized with the Shield of Sparta - Heroine of Infantry award from the President of the National Infantry Association, and the Chief of Infantry for the U.S. Army.

Duell’s name is being added to the honor roll of those who have been recognized by the Infantry family.

The Shield of Sparta - Heroine of Infantry award recognizes spouses of Soldiers who have contributed significantly to supporting their soldier, Col. George H. Duell Jr., USA-Retired, in ways that stand out in the eyes of the Infantry leadership.

The National Infantry Association and the Chief of Infantry recognized her for having served the infantry community and the Army with distinction, and for having demonstrated a superior commitment to family and country, for representing the highest standards of integrity, moral character and perseverance in the face of hardship, and for demonstrating a steadfast volunteer spirit.

The award traces back to the original Shield of Sparta, which Spartan women demanded their Infantryman return carrying the shield in victory, or be carried back on it after giving the ultimate sacrifice. The award is based on the Latin words, “Pro Deo,” “Pro Patria” and “Pro Familia,” which mean For God, For Country and For Family.
