Eagle Scout honored in Franklin Twp.

The Franklin Township Board of Supervisors honored Luke Daniel Wilusz of Lehighton Troop 187 this week with a commendation award for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Wilusz said he has been involved in the organization since he was in the second grade, a total of 11 years.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is the highest honor in the scouting program, involving a strong dedication to the organization and the completion of a service project to benefit the community.

Luke started planning out his service project last August. His idea was to build a lending library at Phifer’s Ice Dam Park in Lehighton.

“I always have loved Phifer’s Ice Dam Park and I wanted to give back, as well as spread my love for reading,” he said.

After planning out the project, Luke began landscaping work at the park in October and started building the library in his garage over the winter. The library was finally installed in February, resulting in a total of six months of work.

Now visitors of the park can visit Luke’s lending library where they are able to comfortably read and possibly share used books of their own among the community. The library area features the library itself, two chairs, and a tree to provide shade on a sunny day.
