Group organizes Black Lives Matter event in Palmerton

Organizers of a Black Lives Matter protest in Palmerton plan to educate and show support through a peaceful protest.

The event will take place Saturday afternoon at the Palmerton Borough Park.

One of the women organizing said they plan to protest peacefully with a focus on promoting issues of peace, justice and equality.

“I’m excited to come and have all these people and show that it is peaceful and we don’t need to have violence to get our point across,” Sierra Hahn said.

The event will include speeches about being a good ally, experiencing racism and police brutality.

Hahn said that she has been motivated by her previous experiences protesting for Black Lives Matter in Palmerton.

During previous demonstrations, people have asked her why she’s protesting in Palmerton when there is no race problem.

“If you would just stand here for five minutes, people scream ‘white power’ as they drive past us. There absolutely is a race problem here, that’s why we keep doing this. We’re not giving up on it,” she said.

Some of the pushback to the protest has come from unexpected locations.

Hahn said after she created a Facebook event for the protest, one of her relatives announced that they planned to counterprotest the event.

Hahn said she is encouraging protesters to focus on the peaceful protest.

“Our main point is to keep this as peaceful as possible and not interact with them violently,” she said.

Protesters plan to meet at 3 p.m. at the Palmerton Borough Park.
