West End news for July 8, 2020

WEFC services

The West End Fire Company was called to 41 incidents reports Chief Don Zipp. That is 5 percent less than in 2019.

However, for the first half year of 2020, the volunteers have responded to 266 incidents so far.

Walks begin

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is offering guided walks in July at Kettle Creek, beginning today.

The walks will begin at 9 a.m. Attendees will hike different parts of the property each week discussing the natural history features at Kettle Creek.

There is a per-person cost, and registration is required and limited. Sturdy footwear is recommended and masks are required.

WEPOSC meets

The West End Park and Open Space Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Auxiliary meets

The American Legion Auxiliary of Post 927, Gilbert, is set to meet at 7 p.m. today.

The group’s executive committee will meet at 6 p.m.

Orders due

McMichaels UMC is holding a pizza sale, cheese pizza only. Orders are due by tomorrow by calling Martha at 570-992-6742.

Pickup is at the church from 8:30 to noon July 18.

Bike night

Bike Nite this Friday is open to the public at the American Legion in Gilbert.

The time is 5 to 9 p.m. and the menu includes burgers, dogs, sides and an open bar, drawing, Best Bike contest, DJ music and more.

All bikes are welcome.

The monthly meeting of Riders is at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Curbside breakfast

McMichaels UMC will hold its donation-only-breakfast, curbside, from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday. It is a full breakfast. Then from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be a bake sale, offering a variety of baked goods, all individually wrapped.

Masks are to be worn. Sandwiches and drinks will be available for purchase also.

Senior meals

For any Monroe County Senior who is faced with the threat of hunger and not knowing where the next meal is coming from, a resource could well be the frozen meals now available through the Monroe County Agency on Aging.

Call the Loder Senior Center at 570-420-3745 for information about the program, including income qualifications.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open Saturday.

The procedure to use the pantry now is a drive-in type of service. Users should follow the direction of the parking coordinators and must not get out of their car.

Food will be brought to one’s vehicle and there will be no set menu.

Insect program

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers an insects program on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon or from 1 to 3 p.m. It will help attendees uncover the incredible insects that live at Kettle Creek.

Discover the different aquatic insects that live in the pond, learn all about the invasive spotted lanternfly while making a cool craft, and venturing out on an insect safari. All listed activities will be covered during each time slot.

This program is geared for children under 14 and there is a cost per child. Families are encouraged to attend. Due to program limitations, registration is required by calling 570-629-3061 by Thursday. Participants must chose 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. slot upon registration.

Payment is due the day of the program. Cash or check made payable to MCCD only.

Face coverings must be worn by all attendees at all times as required by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. Building and gift shop not open to public.

Services resume

Salem UCC in Gilbert has announced that services will resume there at 10 a.m. Sunday. A new supply pastor will be welcomed and Communion will be celebrated.

Each one must bring their own elements, whether it be bread and wine, cookies and juice, or something similar of one’s choosing.

Masks must be worn. Social distancing will be enforced and Bibles and hymnals will not be in the pews.

There will be no social gathering after the service.

Donations can be placed in the collection plate in an envelope when church resumes or mailed directly to the church at 117 Corner Road, Gilbert, PA 18331.

They will be acknowledged by an official donation letter, usable for tax purposes.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church offers its next community Sunday supper at 3 p.m. this Sunday and July 26.

It is a takeout meal. Users are asked to stay in their vehicle and the meal will be brought to the vehicle.

SAL meeting

The Sons of the American Legion is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Legion Post home in Gilbert.

Touch of Home

The Operation: Touch of Home Inc. 2020 Annual Members Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert. In accordance with the club bylaws, notification is made that proxy materials for the annual meeting are available at www.operationtouchofhome.org, where a proxy form can be downloaded.

All completed, signed and dated forms must have been received by Maria Bentzoni, vice president, not later than July 7.

However, they may be given to any Operation: Touch of Home member who will be physically attending the meeting on July 14, and will deliver your proxy at the meeting.

That meeting will include the election of the Board of Directors, new officers, appointment of an accountant/independent auditor, and any other properly brought business.

West End Lions to meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club has announced the club is slated to meet July 16 at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville.

Special arrangements include:

Everyone needs to wear a face mask or covering when entering the restaurant and when leaving. The mask may be removed once you are seated.

No more than four people per table - in other words, every other chair. If a couple is seated at a table, that number could go to five at the table.

During the Lions Toast, attendees will not click glasses. Rather, the glass is to be raised as in a toast to the fellow Lions.

The club’s board will meet at 6 p.m. and the club itself at 7 p.m.

Lion Past District Governor, a former member and officer of the club, Bob Argot, will install the officers for the 2020-2021 year.

In addition, a member or members of the now former Western Pocono Lioness Club will be present to return the club’s charter.

Habitat help

Monroe County’s Habitat for Humanity offers help for those who need help to complete household projects if the homeowner qualifies.

Projects can include: gutter repair, new doors and windows, tree trimming and removal, new appliance including stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer and various repairs.

Qualification financially depends on household number and income, which begins at a one-person family earning less than $38,600 or, for example, an eight-person family earning less than $72,750.

Other qualifications include: must fall below stated income maximums, must be up-to-date on mortgage and taxes, must have homeowner’s insurance, must have owned the home in Monroe County for at least one year.

Fusion coming

Middlecreek Christian Church has announced it will hold its Fusion event this year. However it will be in a somewhat different format due to the social distancing requirements.

The family event will be limited to Saturday only, July 25. It will begin at 2 p.m. and have events into the evening. Then the group will meet July 26, on the hillside, for the morning worship service, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
