Dear Editor:

I was stunned to hear County Commissioner George Halcovage tell the media there is no need for the county’s taxpayers to exercise their God-given right to form an independent commission to audit county government in search of waste, fraud and abuse.

This fundamental right is guaranteed under the Home Rule Clause of the Pennsylvania Constitution, and it’s how we the people ensure that our money is being spent efficiently and appropriately. Several volunteers from Better Schuylkill are currently collecting petition signatures to form the citizens commission for the independent audit.

It’s high time we ask why county taxes and fees keep going up, despite politicians’ promises of tax relief. This is a clarion call for all those who are overtaxed and underserved to join the effort by visiting BetterSchuylkill.com.
