A look back: June 27, 1977

Carbon County’s airport in Mahoning Township will now be known as the Jacob M. Arner Memorial Airport. It was rededicated yesterday in memory of the late Arner during a program which attracted more than 1,000 people.

William A. Bechtel, chairman of the airport authority, presided over the program, which had as its highlight the unveiling of a plaque honoring Arner, labeled as an “aviation pioneer.”

It was purchased with donations from friends of Jake Arner and the Quiet Birdmen organization, of which Arner was a member.

Congressman Dan Flood was among the speakers, calling Arner “one of the finest men I have been privileged to know.”
