Smith nominated to Congress of Future Medical Leaders

Caitlin Smith, a junior honor student at Tamaqua Area High School has been nominated to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts, on June 24-26.

The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who aspire to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country interested in these careers, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.

Caitlin’s nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent Tamaqua Area based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.

During the three-day conference, Caitlin will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology. She will also observe an active surgery and be able to ask questions.

Caitlin is a member of the Tamaqua High School track and field team. As a sophomore, she won two gold medals at the Breslin Invitational in Mount Carmel and two silver medals at the Jack Roddick Invitational at Shippensburg University. She also won numerous medals in the Schuylkill League and District XI track meets. Additionally, she is a member of the cross-country team and the Blue Raider Marching Band.

Caitlin is the daughter of Kerry and Tara Smith of Hometown. She is the granddaughter of Nicholas and Irene Trubilla also of Hometown and Raymond Smith of Lehighton and Donna Smith of Palmerton.
