Monroe, Schuylkill going green

Schuylkill and Monroe counties are next in line to enter the green phase, Gov. Tom Wolf said Friday.

“In Pennsylvania, not only did we flatten the curve, but we are continuing to keep case counts down even as we open our commonwealth,” Gov. Wolf said on Friday. “We will continue to take a measured, phased approach to reopening that relies on science and health experts.”

Monroe and Schuylkill will join Dauphin, Franklin, Huntingdon, Luzerne, Perry and Pike counties in the green designation next weekend. Carbon made the move today. Northampton and Lehigh counties remain in yellow phase.

The new designationallows gyms, barbers and theaters to reopen. Bars and restaurants may allow indoor dining, at half their normal capacity.

Gatherings of up to 250 people are permitted in green zones.

Tamaqua businesses are looking forward to taking another step in the right direction.

Sisters Cantina has made changes to adapt throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant added a temporary delivery service and an outdoor patio section.

“We’ve been fortunate,” said Cary Bates, owner of Sisters. “I feel like our customer base and the local people really helped us out and gave us the boost we needed to get through these three months. We are definitely appreciative, and my employees came through and did a good job of adapting. We’re ready to go back to the way life used to be.”

La Dolce Casa is set to reopen across town. Owner Alfie Picone voluntarily closed his venue temporarily earlier in June for precautionary measures. Now, La Dolce Casa is back open and has its outdoor section available as well as its takeout and delivery services. “We have to go with the flow and try to be very careful,” Picone said of going green next week. “We have a lot to prepare, but we’re ready.”

Making The Cut hair salon will be planning a date for its reopening in the near future. “I’m looking forward to getting back to my clients and excited about the new services of women’s hair and nails in the newly remodeled side of the shop,” said owner Wendy Keich. “We will have extended time between each appointment in order to sanitize between each person. I’m looking forward to this new adventure. We will try hard to get everyone in, please be patient.”

Next Friday, Mount Airy Casino Resort and three indoor water parks will be reopening in Monroe County, with safety guidelines and limited capacity restrictions in place.

Camelback Resort opened its hotel and some attractions Friday, with Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark opening next Friday.

“After a challenging few months, our hospitality industry is thrilled with today’s announcement,” said Chris Barrett, Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau President/CEO. “Our resorts, restaurants, shops and attractions are ready to get back to work serving guests once again.”

More than 265 businesses across the region have adopted the “Pocono Promise.”

By signing the document, businesses voluntarily vow to follow specific safety guidelines to protect residents, employees, and customers as we begin the COVID-19 recovery period.

As of Friday, there are still 21 counties in the yellow phase.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported Friday that there are 686 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 77,999. There are 6,162 total deaths attributed to COVID-19, an increase of 49 new deaths.Carbon County added two new cases, bringing the total to 257, with 24 deaths.

Lehigh County is reporting an additional 19 cases and now has a total of 3,926. Deaths increased by one and now stand at 264.

In Luzerne County, 2,823 cases are reported, an increase of 10. There is one additional death, bringing the total to 162.

In Monroe County, cases reported increased by one to 1,347. The death total remained 103.

In Northampton, 3,217 cases are reported, an increase of 15. Deaths remained level at 238.

Schuylkill County has 677 cases, an increase of nine. Deaths increased by one to 43.
