Gym defies orders and reopens

A Lehighton gym reopened its doors Monday, despite orders from the governor for indoor facilities like it to remain close.

Carbon County is still in the yellow phase of Gov. Tom Wolf’s three-part, color-coded restart of the state. More counties are expected to join the yellow - and even the green - phase by the end of this week.

But in its current state, gyms in Carbon are to remain closed. Despite that, the Zoo Health Club posted on its Facebook page that it still planned to open its doors on June 1.

The gym’s tanning and sauna services remained out of operation, and face masks were required for entry.

Social distancing, the facility wrote, must be adhered to.

A request for comment from the Times News went unanswered by the Zoo Health Club.

When counties were threatening to speed up their own reopenings, bypassing the governor’s timeline, in early May, Wolf called it a “cowardly act.” He also warned businesses, saying they risked licenses, occupancy certificates and other operation necessities if they opened without approval.
