A look back: June 1, 2000

John E. Morgan, founder of the J.E. Morgan Knitting Mills, Hometown, has donated $1.5 million to help build a new emergency services department at Miners Memorial Medical Center in Coaldale.

Construction of a new emergency services department and related renovations means MMMC will be well-positioned to meet the emergency medical needs of our region well into the future. More than 7,500 people visit the ER annually.

Morgan began his company in 1954 in Tamaqua and built it to be the nation’s largest manufacturer of thermal underwear. The family has a long and distinguished record of philanthropic support for various human service organizations.
