Inmate from Carbon dies in Lehigh jail

A Carbon County man died after being found unresponsive in a cell at Lehigh County Jail, where he was an inmate.

Daniel Ognjanovac, 43, of Jim Thorpe, was being held on bail while awaiting trial in an alleged assault which took place in March.

Ognjanovac was pronounced dead shortly after jail staff discovered him in his cell Tuesday evening, according to a news release from Janine Donate, Lehigh County Director of Corrections.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, jail staff discovered Ognjanovac unresponsive in his cell. Jail staff and EMS personnel attempted CPR and lifesaving measures.

Ognjanovac was transported to St. Luke’s Allentown where he was pronounced dead at 6:43 p.m.

Ognjanovac was reportedly being held at the jail on aggravated assault charges stemming from a March incident in South Whitehall Township.

The Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and coroner’s office are investigating the death. An autopsy is pending.
