Thursday deadline

A truckload sale is being held by Schiffs Foodservice at Effort UMC from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday. This is a fundraiser which will benefit the church as well as the shopper. Click on https://schiffs.square.site, hit menu and place an order from the items listed.

Print out the confirmation/order number, pay online and stop at the church next Friday and pick up the order.

WEPOSC fundraisers

Bernie Kozen, WEPOSC executive director, and Kim Tuin, program coordinator, have announced new fundraisers for West End Park and Open Space Commission.

During these times, many are ordering online, and at no cost to those residents, they are asked to check out the Rakuten site using the link https://www.rakuten.com/r/BKOZEN2?eeid=28187.

Those who sign up and make a qualifying purchase by logging in from this site first and ordering from hundreds of sites on it will receive a percent rebate in the form of a quarterly check.

It is an easy way to earn a little extra cash for items one would be purchasing anyway, but also for the West End Park Open Space Commission, which will receive a one time referral fee for adding new members.

Also, when ordering from Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and select WEPOSC as the charity under The Friends of West End Park and Open Space Commission, alphabetically under the letter F, and a donation will be made to the organization and used for the community events the WEPOSC provides.

Special visit

Members of the Western Pocono Women’s Club traveled to the Getz Personal Care Home in Jonas this past Thursday and brought joy to the residents and staff.

Though not able to visit inside, the group of visitors did a sing-along with some of the residents including favorites like “You Are My Sunshine” and a song from “Sound of Music.” Some of the residents came out on the porch while others watched from the windows inside.

Although club members could not serve drinks and snacks or make crafts as they usually do when they visit the home, they did hold up signs and gave the residents cheery cards.

Senior honored

This past Sunday, Our Lady Queen of Peace, Gilbert, honored Jordan McGrath, Pleasant Valley Class of 2020, and Natalie Martino, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Penn State University in communications sciences and disorders with a minor in Spanish.

McGrath will be attending ESU this fall and majoring in computer science.

At Pleasant Valley, McGrath served as president of the FBLA and the Computer Club.

Twice state champion in network design, he was ranked ninth in the nation.

At OLQP, he was a member of Teens of Peace, youth group CORE leadership team and served on the church Tech Team.

Martino also graduated from the Schreyer Honors College and plans to pursue her doctorate of audiology.

She participated in Thon and the American Sign Language club and is a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence.

Blood drive

Ray Price Auto Park on Route 209 in Stroudsburg is the nearest blood drive with an opening to donate at this time.

Call 1-800-RED-CROSS to set up an appointment for June 4.

Venue change

The Western Pocono Women’s Club has officially been released from its obligation to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to beautify the flower gardens across from the Chestnuthill Diner, which the group adopted in 2002 and for 17 years tended magnificently.

The safety of the members working there was a major concern, so the group took on other volunteer responsibilities.

The skill and time of the volunteers will first be used at the Western Pocono Memorial Park located on Molasses Valley Road, Kunkletown, with the hopes to: beautify some areas of the West End Fairgrounds in due time.

Many perennials have already been transplanted by the members and male helpers, and the group’s sign will be transplanted when current state restrictions are lifted.
