Protect environmental funding

Dear Editor,

Recently state legislators passed House Bill 1822 but attached an amendment, A05143, that would freeze dedicated funding that supports our parks, trails, recreation projects and recycling. This stifles conservation efforts at a time when they are most needed.

This legislation targets 16 special funds, eight specifically environmental, including the Environmental Stewardship Fund and Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund, which are both legally designated to protect and improve our green spaces. With the increased usage of our already underfunded parks and trails, COVID-19 is proving that people need nature more than ever. Conservation investments cannot afford cuts at a time like this.

Additionally, these funds not only protect water quality and conserve public lands, but also reduce health risks. Right now, access to clean air, water and outdoor spaces is crucial to safeguarding households and our communities from the pandemic.

Lastly, as our natural areas provide billions in economic benefits, blocking necessary conservation projects could slow Pennsylvania’s economic recovery.

HB1822 is being pushed at the moment we most need to protect our water, our environment our health. How much cardboard and plastic is created by at-home delivery?

My community lost funding for recycling several months in 2019. Don’t use the current COVID-19 crisis to push a pollution agenda. It’s already passed the House. Please, now is the time for the Senate to stop it.

Wishing you good health,
