Nesquehoning police are citing a Slatington man for several traffic offenses after officers were called to a brush fire last month, but ended up chasing the driver who was doing upward of 80 mph on an ATV on a borough road in the same area.
On April 25, officers were called to the Fourth Hollow in the Hauto Valley Estates section of Nesquehoning for a reported brush fire.
But while en route along Route 54, officer Carl Breiner noticed an ATV ahead of him tailgating a car on the road.
The ATV, driven by Danny Todd Day, 56, of Slatington, quickly turned off Route 54 onto Park Avenue and Breiner followed.
As he attempted to follow the ATV, Breiner had the cruiser up to 60 mph but was still not catching it. The two vehicles headed right onto Industrial Road from Park, and topped out with speeds upward of 80 mph in the posted 25 mph zone.
Breiner activated his lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle and began slowing down near the borough garage because of the large number of vehicles parking on the side of the road as people prepared to go off-roading in the same area of the brush fire, which was started by a bonfire.
Officers caught up with the ATV as it pulled next to a trailer.
Day had no registration or insurance and told police he had just purchased the vehicle.
Breiner told Day how fast he was going and Day apologized because he knew he was wrong for doing it.
Day was cited with several traffic offenses.
Later that week, Nesquehoning Borough Council signed an emergency proclamation prohibiting vehicles from parking along Industrial Road because of the number of offroaders who were parking there and creating issues.
