Carbon County behind in census response

Carbon County Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that only 46.3% of county residents have responded to the census to date. That is below the state average of 56.2%.

“We’re 52 out of 67 counties,” Nothstein said.

He reminded residents that not responding to the census could cost the county approximately $2,000 per person in federal funding every year for the next decade.

The 2020 census is available online, and Nothstein said that now is the best time to do it since it will give people something to do for a few minutes and will help the county in the future.

“It’s extremely important that everyone gets counted,” he said. “Get on your computer this weekend and fill it out. There are only a handful of questions. It’s not hard.”

Census results determine everything from funding for education, health care services, transportation projects and more, to the number of seats a state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The 2020 census can be filled out at 2020Census.gov, by calling 844-330-2020 or by mail.
