It’s in your nature: Let’s see if you know the Times News warblers

I have observed 31 different species of warblers in Carbon County in my lifetime. In my limited birding elsewhere, I’ve added two other species. I’m sure in the “bucket list” trip to Wyoming and Montana I will be able to add a bunch more.

Warblers, with only one exception, are really small birds, and for the novice or casual birder are easily overlooked. Most warblers are about 5 inches in size (some a ¼ inch smaller. In comparison, a goldfinch is 5 inches.

Many warblers feed high in the treetops, making them harder to see, or less easily appreciated. There are a few species that feed in lower vegetation, and two or three species that feed along streams. Most nest in trees and shrubs, but one, the ovenbird, nests on the forest floor.

I have selected this early May issue to highlight the warblers because over the next three or four weeks it is the best time (little leaf cover and peak migration) for you to observe them locally. My file of warbler photos has increased since my retirement (more time on task.) So let’s see how you do on the test. Of the 11 warblers pictured on this test, 10 breed and are summer residents here in the Times News coverage area. You’ll find the answers at the page bottom. No peeking.

Here are the warblers to place with the photos: Chestnut-sided warbler, magnolia warbler, black-and-white warbler, parula warbler, yellow warbler, Cape May warbler, black-throated green warbler, Blackburnian warbler, pine warbler, hooded warbler, redstart.

Test Your Outdoor Knowledge: Which of these owls will migrate? A. saw whet owl, B. short-eared owl, C. snowy owl, D. none of these, E. all of these.

Last Week’s Trivia Answer: It is true, a red eft is a land-dwelling larva of the red spotted newt.
