New York driver had gun, $15,000

A New York state driver was cited following a traffic stop.

State police at Stroudsburg said a trooper was on patrol in a unmarked cruiser at 7:09 a.m. on Thursday along Interstate 80 in Stroud Township, when a Dodge Charger began to tailgate his vehicle. The vehicle moved into the left lane with speeds near 105 mph in a 55 mph zone.

A traffic stop was made and the driver identified as Ahmed Abdi, 28, of Syracuse, who had two passengers. A strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from the vehicle. A consent search was made of the vehicle and found was a loaded Taurus .38-caliber revolver behind the driver seat.

All three occupants had large sums of cash, totaling about $15,000. They said they were traveling from upstate New York to New York City. Troopers said all the stories given by the occupants were inconsistent.

Troopers charged Abdi with firearms and traffic violations. The investigation into the incident is continuing.
