Tamaqua parks closed, no congregating

The majority of parks within the borough of Tamaqua are closed, with the exception of Rabbit Run Reservoir and Owl Creek Dam.

Tamaqua Council members said Tuesday that the borough will begin removing basketball hoops at the playgrounds to discourage the congregation of people at the parks.

Kellner’s Dam also remains closed.

All parks have been posted, but members said some of the posted signs have been removed.

Police Chief Henry Woods said that the department is not looking to increase interactions between the police and people, specifically kids, who are out in public and congregating.

“It’s a parenting issue,” he said, “People are calling and they want us to be parents.”

“We can’t afford to have people sick in our department,” he added.

The police will continue to respond to emergency calls, but will continue to handle nuisance calls over the phone.
