Local author releases play performance

In a world that has been turned upside down with a global pandemic, one area playwright is hoping to spread a little cheer through a performance of his book turned play.

Gene Duffy of Jim Thorpe, who wrote the book “As the Matzo Ball Turns” under the pen name Jozef Rothstein, has already adapted the book into a play. His dream is that it will one day open on Broadway.

The play, by the same name as the book, has been seen at various festivals, including the 2017 Philadelphia Fringe Festival and was even named top pick at the festival. That performance, Duffy said, is now available on YouTube.

The decision to put the performance online for the public to view was made after Duffy decided that it could provide residents who are staying inside as a way to stay safe with some much needed lighthearted entertainment.

“The show is still a work in progress but we’ve come a long way since our humble beginnings in 2014,” he said. “I was going to keep it close to the vest and just continue to work on a new edition of the show but with these stressful and difficult times decided to make it available for the public for a little comedic release. … I thought it would be a cool thing to do.”

Duffy credits his cast and crew of the performance for making “incredible sacrifices to bring the show to life.”

“As the Matzo Ball Turns” is a somewhat autobiographical sketch of Duffy’s 10-year pursuit of fame while living in Los Angeles.

According to previous Times News articles published about the book, Duffy had worked in a Jewish deli and encountered hit men, drag queens, ladies of the night, runaways and celebrities.

In 2014, Duffy decided to take the next step and began adapting his book into a musical.

Since then, he has worked tirelessly to adapt his creation into a lighthearted event that brings a smile to many.

He said that each version of the show, he has made gradual improvements and hopes to get back on the fundraising trail in the hopes of landing his play in the spotlights of Broadway one day.
