Monroe man dies of burns

A Monroe County man died of burns he sustained when he caught fire while burning garbage on his property.

State police at Stroudsburg said the incident occurred at 12:34 p.m. March 18 along Shady Hill Road in Middle Smithfield Township.

Troopers responded to the location for a report of a man on fire. When they arrived, he was engulfed in flames. Troopers used fire extinguishers for their patrol units to put out the flames. A medical helicopter landed at the intersection of Route 402 and Coolbaugh Road and flew the man to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. At about 6:10 p.m. the Lehigh County coroner reported the man had died.

The victim was identified by the coroner as Harold Honeychurch, 89. The coroner report stated the victim suffered burns over 90 percent of his body. The death was ruled an accident.
